Paid Internship Program
We employ post-detention youth at our Hall Closet Thrift Store, giving them tangible work experience at a critical point in their lives. Most post-detention youth return to their community with little or no support systems. They often return to broken families, non-existent adult figures, and low-income status. Without advanced education and skills, they struggle to get any job and, in many instances, may not even have a place to live. This program provides our interns not only with financial help and work experience, but also a support system to guide them through a difficult transition period.
An intern acquires basic employable skills through their 6 month internship. Our interns are young but they must be on time, dress appropriately, behave professionally, communicate well with the public, be organized, follow a schedule, and show initiative, all while acquiring hands-on retail and vocational experience. Additionally, we help craft their resumes, support educational goals, and write references so they can continue apply to jobs available in the community. They work alongside volunteers who mentor them and provide the emotional support they need.
The objective of the program is to develop workforce-ready skills, a steady paycheck, and mentorship for post-detention youth. These objectives are key in reducing recidivism, promoting diversity, and to fill in the gap in services after detention. Apply here!
